Girls lacrosse had its start in Kentucky in 1998 when Coach Stu Bailey, a transplant from Maryland, petitioned US Lacrosse to start a chapter called the Kentucky Lacrosse Association (KLA). The KLA founded the state’s first teams that year, and school-affiliated squads began to pop up in the Louisville area shortly after.

The KLA continued to govern and manage the sport in the state until 2013 when the Athletic Directors took it over and formed both the Kentucky Scholastic Lacrosse League (KSLL) and the Commonwealth League. The KSLL consisted of mainly Louisville-area teams, while the Commonwealth League featured teams from other parts of the state. Each league had its own championships

Beginning in the 2025 season, the sport will finally be recognized by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) and both leagues will be merged together. This is a very exciting step that will certainly lead to even more growth and we are all very excited to see where the sport goes from here!!
